First of all, hello everyone.. new forum member here, and relativly new fish keeper as well.

When I first got into tropical fish keeping, I went straight for the Guppy. I always loved them, but lately I've been increasingly frustrated with them... only due to the fact that I keep having guppies die.

I have an established 10gal tank of about 6 months now, it's held different fish. Mostly guppies... but 1 out of 5 of my guppies seems to get what I've researced as "Colmnaris" :swear:

Is it just me or are guppies highly prone to this? I've seen it a lot at stores as well.

Is there a cure aside from the expensive antibiotics? (I'm fully willing to spend the money on antibiotics, but I was wondering if there was a cheaper route)

I too would be interested in any information regarding this horrible 'Guppy' disease.. I have seen it many times, and they are one of the only fish I have a hard time keeping alive. Is it their genetics from overbreeding or what?

Any ideas on how to cure/treat this type of thing would be awesome..

Wheres Guppy?

I heard it started with Mollys, it was called the "mad molly disease" for a while. It's basicly a bacterial infection. People have told me it's due to poor water conditions but I have to disagree in my case.. I've tested my water several times and it's all turned out fine.

With guppies and mollies 1 tablespoon salt per 5 gallons and slightly hard water will help prevent it. Even when you have good water parameters you can have a high bacterial load in the water that tends to increase the chance of columnaris infections, some strains of fancy guppies have low resistance to it as do high-fin and black velvet mollies. Also there are different strains of thedisease and some are very virulent. Kanaplex, Binox, and erythromycin are also usually effective treatment but antibiotic foods are most effective if you catch it early, treat the whole tank as some strains are very contagious
