Hello,
I've been trading a friend some african cichlids that I "breed" for a lot of guppies he breeds to feed my fish and have decided to get rid of my african cichlids to set up a larger mostly south american cichlid tank. I want to breed my own guppies to feed this tank and figure to be safe I want to have around 200 every 3 days or 400+ a week.
This works out to something like 40 female guppies and 10-20 male guppies I hear ratios varying from 2 female per 1 male to 6 male per 1 male. This is assuming 50 fry per month per female guppy and 100% survival rate.
Any of you guppy breeders got an idea of how many I can expect to survive? How big of a tank do I want to meet this sort of demand? There would of course be much more than that amount of guppies in the tank that's just what I'd start with, I'd let the tank do it's thing for 2-4 months and then I'd only take out what I could without slowing down the tank (~200 twice a week).
I plan to have the tank heavily planted mostly with java moss to protect the fry from being eaten, I also think I'll have 1 bristle nose pleco per 10 gals of water, and a couple dozen red cherry shrimp also.
Thanks in advance for your feedback,
