Gymneogeophagus Labiatus centurion

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
look on google.

I had some Gymno labs a few years back, most important thing is to keep the water on the cool side and to provide an actual cool resting period for a couple months, below 70'F, some will say low 60s. I stunted and basically killed mine by keeping them a constant mid 70s, year round.

Look at my Uruguay thread in my sells forum, got some pcitures there. Centurion is along the Brazilian border with Uruguay, When we were there in late Novemner night temps were still getting into the 40's. Felipe calls the G. labiatus from tha region Blue Yerlito. Ph is 7.2, with fairly soft water, No heater needed, but they can take higher themps for part of the year. I don't really think you need a real cold period as they are being bred in Florida on fish farms in ponds near Miami. Ken

thats a mouth full try saying that 5 times fast
peaceful and color full fish keep in mind they like normal tropical temps but for a few months( like 3 ) out of the year they need cold water around 60F which is important to keep them healthy

the larger geophagus don't seem to need these cool periods

Fast flowing water
Large rocks and coarse gravel
up to 10-14 dGH softer water is fine)
PH anywhere near neutral is fine
omnivores
somewhat peaceful toward their own species
temp. is ok around 75-78 F
cooler temps for a 2-3 month period between 50-65 F will help induce spawning and also brighten colors. (be careful when adjusting temperature, no more than 2-3 degrees a day)
They tend to be very timid too
Males will reach about 6-8" and females 5-6"
Easy to sex when sub-adult, the male develops a nuchal hump and are more colorful
