Gymnogeophagus classification

Hello,
I am having a hard time understanding the classification of these guys. I need a little guidance as to how they are broken down into different groups such as the rhabdotus group etc. and what species each group contains.

If you go to aqvaterra, Felipe has a very nice breakdown, and photos of the Uruguayan Gymnogeophagus differences between the gymnogenys and rhabdotus groups, and other fishes of the area.

Thank you very much! I don't see anything about meridionalis or ex- meridionalis though, it seems he classifies everything by location.

Had the camera out so figured I would show off my Gymnogeophagus meridionalis sp. Norte that I got today.
This big behemoth is twice the size of everyone else.
