For those of you who have kept Gymnogeophagus meridionalis and rhabdotus, I'm curious if you have a preference between the two. Any thoughts on one being more colorful than the other, or being easier to raise. I know gymnogeophagus can be slow growers.

I agree with Matt. It really depends on the collection location. I do prefer the ex-Meridionalis from the Rio Queguay basin and Sarandi

seems rhabdotus get a little larger and are bluer, with ex-meridionals usually haveing lots of red with the blue and the fin extensions, otherwise they are both pretty easy to keep and bred.

I've got a number of Gymnos, although my confidence in their names is based on what they were sold to me as (and I would defer to the experts if I'm wrong). The first is the "Norte" variant, which I believe is ex-meridionalis. Next is a "blue neon", also part of the ex-meriodionalis group, at least from what I've gleaned online. Of the two, I prefer the Norte - lots of gold and red and blue. Third is a male G. gymnogenys 'Quilero' (also listed as Yerbalito). I love the colors on the G. gymnogenys, and they are faster growers than the first two, at least in my experience. None are overly aggressive. Currently they're having a cool down period.
