Hey all, does anyone have any general information about this fish? Like how large they grow, dietary needs, if they do well in community tanks and/or planted setups?

Thanks!

Are they Paso Pache I or II?

Paso Pache I-

Care for these guys is about the same. They get to a max of about 5". They do fine in planted tanks. They are peaceful fish and are great in a community tank. They sift sand so its a good idea to have some sand for them. Nothing special for a diet, I feed my gymnogeos sinking cichlid gold, flakes, brine shrimp, and blood worms.

The only weird thing about them is they need a cool down period (this is a debated topic). I have my tank unheated so the water temp varies from the 60s in the winter to 80s in the summer. Hope this helps!

Thank you very much abarilot - that's exactly the information I was looking for!

Edit - Also, do you know what ratio of males to females they should be kept in?

I've been keeping mine in a pond in summer, and unheated in the basement in winter.
Water temps are down in the 50s right now.

Males get a bit aggressive when the water heats up on the 70s, and as Dog said, best to have plenty of females as a distraction.

I've watched a male unrelentingly chase an unresponsive female across a 300 gal pond in summer, but be very passive in a 50 gal tank in winter with water in the 50s F'.

duanes, thank you for the info, and beautiful pictures!

I have paso pache II in my 75 gallon with some balzanii and crenicichla minuano. The male chases the female sometimes, but seems to have calmed down, although the water temperature is in the mid 60s now.

The tank is planted, I have no problems with them digging stuff up.
