Hello,
I saw a neon Blue valentine at LFS and i just had to have it....so I bought it brought it home and then researched. wrong order i know. Well this is what i have learned. He needs to "Cool Down" for 2-3 months a year at 62 degrees. and He shouldn't be alone. Right now I have him (i use Him loosly not sure of the sex) in with my pair of blue Grouamis and pair of gold Grouamis, some red minor tetras and an angelic Botia. He was instant buds with the grouamis. But my question is that when i cool him down who should i put with him. i know the easy answer would be to get another valentine. But i'm not sure i want to do that. Any other options? I don't like goldfish..no offense to anyone else out there. Thanks for your responses.

What size tank do you have or would you been transferring the fish to cool down in? I keep all my gymnos in unheated tanks year round. They can handle a wide range of temps from the 90s to the 40s but I wouldnt recommend the extremes. My tanks temps range from the low 60s to high 70s. There are types of tetras and corys that can handle the cool down period since you are not into goldfish

Thanks for the reply!!! They live in a 56G but I would put them into a 55G in the basement during cool down. So what you are saying is that you just leave your tank without a heater year round whatever temp it is in your house that' what it is in their's. Well thats easy enough. Well I have tetras and Cory's that might make a pretty easy set up!!! THANKS!!!!

Jess:)

Is this an actual requirement? I know little to nothing about the gmnogeo's, is this common practice with one or more species from this group?

I'm not sure about other species in this group not that I have found....This is my first Gymno So I'n not sure. I don't believe it is a requirement but it makes for a healthier happier fish...which to me kinda makes it a requirement, I fufill my fishes needs as a respondsabilty of having them. However i think that some people get alittle carried away, I'm not sure which side of the line this falls on.

Some people have reported that they'll do poorly or waste away over time if you do not give them a cool-down period. It's one of the things that has kept me from getting Gymnos. All the tanks in my house are fairly warm and it'd be hard to give them a cool-down period for me. (I'm in Florida, so none of my tanks would ever get too cold unless I put them in the garage!)

All I've read is that they do better with the cool down if you're looking for them to eventually breed. At the moment, mine are in a tank that stays around 72, but I had them in a cooler tank for a while. I still have a hard time believing three months at temps 10 degrees cooler makes that big of a difference. I will warn you though. They are extremely slow growers. As slow as calvus on the African side, if not slower.

They do need to be cooled. Ive kept a group of non breeder G. n. sp. "El Norte" in with my severums for a whole year now as sort of an experiment and they look horrid! They are not longer in that tank and I would not recommend anyone try it.

Ryan I know people do keep them in Florida and if you are able to get the water temp in the high 60s i bet they'd be fine. Lucky here in Socal the weather pretty much mimics Uruguay so I haven't had to worry about the temp not getting low enough.

Good perspective...
