I have a tank i have set up for this eel. It is a brackish tank 1.009-1.011, and has been set up for quite some time. Its all cycled and ready now. I got petco to order me one in,now that its in,im having second thoughts. It looks cool and all, a little on the small side, about 5" or so.
What makes me second it is the fact i never seen one full grown. Is it that hard to keep alive? Is there anyone on here who has a large or full one that has pics of it? thanks for the info

I've had one that did not make it, because it came in fw and i did not have enough time to convert it to b rackish..anyway they do beter in salt..a guy I know in Lisbon has one for years, already..not a very pretty moray eel, very brownish...

lol, yea, there not the best looking but when you can't do all out salt, it's the next best thing for what i was told. Just never seen one full grown or even heard of one live long. The one i orderd from petco is in brackish and im just waiting to see it (for My self)eat before i buy it. I guess thats about the best i can do. Just hate to have fish dye on my hands couse of something i could have done to save it. Looking to here of some one who was able to keep it alive and heathy so i can have some insite on what i need to do hands on. Not just what i have read. If anyone can understand, im not the best in wording and spelling:screwy: :)

Has Knowone ever kept one alive to full or even close to full grown?

I know they can live to there potential in high salinity brackish water. But alot of people choose to go salt, and then their are more "attractive" eels out there. I personally quite like them, do well in groups too.

so these should be full salt? thanks for the help, i did not know that. Thought it was ok in a heavy brackish. thanks

Mine are doing fine in low brackish.

Have had them for over 2 years. I believe one is over 3. They aren't real long, maybe 16-17 inches. The larger one looks a little different then the 2 smaller ones. Different species possibly that one was bought large. The other two were grown from about 7 inches and a little smaller than the girth of a sharpie. Now it looks like they could swallow 1/2 a role of quarters...lol

Mine get a long great in a community brackish tank. As far as feeding I just throw them pieces of shrimp that are too big for the scats and monos to eat.

I did have probobly 6 of them prior to the ones I have now. It took me that many before I did my own research instead of listening to LFSs. Main problem was the fact that the LFS insisted they could be kept in fresh water. I switched them to brackish and it took a few weeks for them to eat but after that they went nuts. They were in a 55 for growth. Just the 3 eels, no other fish. I just dumped in freeze dried krill and they would actually come up to the surface to feed. After they were fulll they would drop down and retreat to thier hideouts.

Are they the prettiest eel out there....NO... are they the BEST addition you can get for a brackish community tank? I think so. Besides, their personalities make up for thier looks.
----this is my experience. Take it for what it's worth.

This pic is probobly a little over a year old if I remember right.......Fahaka had to go after his ick left...He took a few nibbles of eel with....lol

see seeing that pic, i think they aren't that bad looking at all. And you're right they have great personalities, and are fun to watch together too.
