I spotted some H. carpinte at an LFS today, they were all about 1" in size.

All of them displayed dark pigment in the dorsal fin, and they were all scrapping and displaying to each other and just being territorial.

Is it really possible the whole tank was full of females?

maybe. I have a friend who bought 20 umbie juvees and they were all female. As for carpinte, I tell everyone to be careful sexing them. Everyone swore up and down I had 2 males and in a few months they had spawned. If these are only an inch, I think its too early to sex via the dorsal fin.

As to my experiences black spot on the dorsal whatever the age and the length of the fish, they come out female. most of the Cichlasoma and exCichlasoma species have this black spot on the dorsals.

The Species I have seen with the spots are; Salvini, Festae, Texas, Carpinte

They may be too small to just observe to see breeding signs. I have seen this in the past. Males are in there. Just gotta wait. Some males do have the spot. I had 3 pairs of Escondidos in the past and they all shocked me when they paired up because I thought most were females too.
