Well, I've had a pair of carpintis for about 3 months and they did the dirty deed last night. I know this must be hard for most of you to believe given that they are so difficult to breed, but what can I say, I'm a pro. :)

I bought them as 1.5" juvies, took a guess at male/female, and got lucky (or is it they got lucky?). The female is barely 3" and the male is about 4". Here are some pics.

Congratulations on the spawn...what size tank and anything in there with em?

There are 6 Astyanax mexicanus (Mexican tetra) and 1 Pimephales vigilax (harmless minnow) in the tank with them. The tank is 75g. So far the pair has kept the tetras on the other side of the aquarium. Should I consider removing the other fish before the eggs hatch?

Idk about carpintis but i know with many other CA/SA the male is only allowed near the eggs if there are other fish in the tank (because he wards them off) so i would leave them in there and if the carpintis kill the tetras then think about taking them out... but a 75 should defiinitely be big enough to leave the tetras in tho (in my very unexperienced opiniion)

Very cool beans! Looks like a great tank and a couple great specimen! Congrats! carpintis are definitely one of my favorite fish. Good luck with the fry!
