2 weeks ago I got a H.deppi from a friend of mine since he had a breeding pair and this fish was the 3rd wheel and got a little beat up by the other 2 fish.

I put her in my 40 gallon tank to heal up before I put her in my main CA cichlid tank. The 40 has 5 congo tetras a pair of Kribensis and a Severum cichlid.

This morning i woke up and the H. deppi turns out to be a female and she has laid a couple of hundred eggs on a rock. The funny thing is she never got into the typical breeding dress but she is garding the eggs and the Severum guards the area as well.

I'm not sure if the eggs are fertilized but I was for sure surprised to see the 2 paired up this morning with eggs laid.

Well I came home and the eggs were eaten. I'm kind of glad though since I have no room for any more fish and for sure not for some hybrids.

Judging by the fins which is a bad way of sexing I'd think the Sev is a male but I'd have to vent it in order to be sure. I do think that the Sev was the egg eater since he was super fat yesterday evening.

Is it a H. efasciatus? They are easy to sex based on facial markings.
