This guy recently started showing breeding colors, but no female present.
But at the same time, the other one is starting to look more female.
Thoughts on gender now?

Bump, anyone know why this "male" is displaying breeding colors with no female?
I've had only female cichlids do this in the past w/ laying eggs.

Is their any other female cichlids in there that can possibly be making him excited ?

There are, but he pretty much stays in his spot and away from the other fish. Would that matter?
I was hoping maybe the other one is a female and they would pair up, but they stay away from each other.

It's so weird bc my female convict did that as well. She got dark with orange belly and saw her swim back nforth taunting her reflection. Then next day woke up with full pot of eggs. I think sometimes they work themselves up if ready to breed

Cichlids don't always need to be breeding to change their appearance. Any number of things can cause them to do this.Stress, forming hierarchy and courtship can all cause a change in colour or pattern.

This is true. He meticulously cleaned out a cave and is defending it. I guess if this fish was actually a female, she would have laid eggs.
But maybe they are the same sex, but one is more dominant than the other?
It's funny they both started out having a sloping head, but now the one is more round, like most females I've seen.

To me the 1st pic looks female (a very dominant one indeed), although most Herichthys pairs take on identical colors when spawning.
It may be that the most colorful one is a dominant female, and they are simply in a lesbian relationship.
All kidding aside, I have had a few female pairs spawn wth each other.
In the absence of a acceptable dominant male,I believe females spawning together will help them get rid of eggs, in so prevent them from being killed if egg bound.
That said, the male carpintus on the right below, has almost idententical colors to the female when guarding a spawn.
