Can anyone give me some info on these? I'm not talking about the built in overflows that come in some tanks. Mainly I'm just looking to know if they are noisy and if there are any big disadvantages. I am thinking about maybe doing a right to left water flow similar to a river instead of back to front like a hang on back filter.

Not sure I am getting your usage right.
Do you plan on running the out put of the overflow through a filter, or just for circulation?
HOB overflows are the number one choice for sump systems worldwide.
Quite a few designs and manufacturers.
Some can be quite loud, others not. Most all make noise of some kind.

I want to use one to drain into a wet/dry and get pumped back into the tank. I have a 180 with 2 cornerflows and I was curious how noisy it would be compared to that. I keep reading about the overflows losing the siphon at times too. I wanted to do a custom tank with the overflow box on the left side of the tank and the outlet from the pump on the left.

I built 2 silencers for my HOB overflow and it's dead silent. Look up gurgle buster.

CPR makes some nice units. these need to be ran with an Aqua Lifter pump to keep them primed. you can either buy an overflow box like the CPR unit or make one yourself, using the DIY PVC design.

another option are the ones made by www.glass-holes.com This would be my first choice if my tank didnt come with built in overflows, but it does require that you drill into the tank. as for noise, covering the outside part of an overflow box with a thick sheet of glass or acrylic helps a lot

wait...your tank has overflows and you dont want to use them? built in overflows are always the best method, you should use them

No the built in overflows are on my 180. I am going to get a 75 and I'm thinking about doing this. I was looking at the CPR units and the Eshopps units. I was mainly asking if anyone had any problems with theirs and if theirs were noisy thats all.
