I am stocking my 100 gallon (72x18x19) tank and trying to find some interesting african species. Right now, it's primarily polypterus and ropefish, and an african knife. I was planning on adding some ctenopoma acutirostre to the tank eventually. My question is how well would a h. odoe do with the knifefish and ctenopoma? I've read they do well with bichirs, but also realize that they are a predator and the others may appear as prey to them. Anyone tried this combo?

Cool, I have another african knife in my 29 gallon with my sb albino senegal, may have to move him into the 100. So you do think k the h. odoe wouldn't cause any probs with the ctenopomas?

As long as the size difference is minimal there should not be a problem, odoes are predatory but not very aggressive.

some can be very aggressive, I have one that's taken out a dat,aro and almost a paroon

most odoes just hate silver colored fish.
so it should work out fine.
just make sure theyre all about the same size.

Agreed, my old odoe used to CONSTANTLY try to start fights with a similar sized brycon. One day the brycon must have gotten tired of him because I eventually found him on the bottom being scavenged by a large pleco :( H. Odoe grows alot faster than C. Acutirostre, so I don't see the combination lasting long - however, if you can get some larger Ctenos (~4"+) they should be fine until hte odoe is up and over 10".

Steatocranus Tinanti - bad idea housing a small, slender bodied fish with an Odoe. They'll be food in no time.

depends on the odoe really.mine is approx 12" now and he has a 3" jack dempsey,4" heros rotkeil,4" blue acara as tankmates.the odoe is not interested in the other fish at all.

tankmates hes either eaten,or,tryed to eat are apollo sharks, gars, kribs.

they are jumpers as well.i changed my substrate last night and was trynig to catch the odoe when he did his party piece and jumped out of the tank landing behind  the tank.i couldnt get him out.it took me 5 mins in the end to get him.i had to use some sugar tongs and gentley grab his tail.

fantastic fish with lots of character.my odoe is the only fish ive ever sold then had to go back to my lfs a week later to get him back as i missed him so much.

hope this helps your decision

mark.
