Hello,

I'm currently cycling a 120 gallon tank. I was at the LFS tonight trying to figure out what I want to put in it and they have a mated pair of H. Pearsei. One, assuming the male was about 9" the other was about 7". They said they really need a home and that they've been there for about 2 years. They were beautiful but I want some information about them.

I'm stuggling to find much. Can anyone point me in the right direction or share your experience? How long do they live? Will I be able to put anything else in the tank? They seemed to think that they would be pretty agressive and I might not be able to but anything else with them. Do you agree? Water parameters? Temps? Anything special I would need to know?

Also, they were going to sell the pair to us for $200. Is that crazy to pay that much?

If they've been there for two years and the are only 9" & 7", it's safe to day that they are both stunted. I have a 14"-15" male that's barely two years old. I personally would not pay $ 200.00.

They are an awesome community cichlid because they're not too aggressive but does not get pushed around because of their bulk. Tank mates are bocourti, pikes, parachromis, Barred Midas, Bifasciatus & synspilus.

if they had them 2 yrs. then they probably only fed them once every couple days just to keep them alive so they werent spending money on fish food. and i agree not worth 200.00

Thanks for the info. Don't want them if they've been mistreated. I can't find any good info on them. I thought they seemed really expensive. I'm a softy though and the lady was definitely pulling at my heart strings... They were trying to sell them for $164 a piece! $200 for the pair was the "deal" they offered me. Gorgeous fish though - you're lucky to have them.

you may be able to make them a offer and they would probably take seeing they been taking up there space for 2 yrs plus feeding.

They also made the comment that they used to breed regularly and haven't in awhile. This was kind of a red flag to me that something might be wrong... They looked pretty healthy - they were kind of shy. I think the smaller one was a bit on thin side but like you said I'm sure they're not getting fed enough.

Decisions, decisions... I hate thinking that they would spend the rest of their lives at the store. I'm such a sap.

I'd have to agree, that old and that size screams mistreated, maybe not now, but before the LFS got em, I have a beautiful Female who is about a year (maybe) and is 8" easy, Tank mates are Geo's, Chocolate, Sajica Pair, and Severum Pair. They will much lettuce like it nobodys business.....

Nuthman~

I'd buy a stunted fish if it still looked nice. When I run into big fish that I'm interested at LFS's I tell them, do you want this fish to go to a good home? I'll give you $xx. Most stores want to sell large fish for next to nothing since they got them for free or cheap anyways. Costs more to house them in the long run if nobody buys them. I found a 14" johanna pike earlier this month for $15. Paid $10 for him, cleaned him up, and found him a good home in a 180gallon, also managed to make $15 off of him.

No way $200.00 I spent $30.00 on my 3"-4" a little less than a year ago and I thought that was too much. But I will say that it is a good attraction to my CA cichlid setup. Its probaly 9"-10" (eyeballed) and it can eat.... every hour on the hour, but I only feed it 2-3 times a day. GL on your decision.
