How often are the actual Hypostomus Plecostomus seen in the hobby?

I know that what we attribute the name plecostomus and common pleco to fish that are actually a completely different species. I thought i had read in a book one time that the actual Hypostomus plecostomus is rarely imported anymore, but its very possible that i just made that up.

I was just curious as to the avaliability of the true plecostomus, and i think i may have found some in a lfs.

ummm probably not that often anymore, it's mainly Pterygoplitchthys and hybrids, but there are Hypostomus out there... a lot tend to be something other than plecostomus though.

doesn't look like what I find as a 'common' pleco to me......Pattern and color are completely different, as is the over all shape....But, like you said, I could just be making all this up.....hahahaha....

Common pleco is a common name given to several different species, including the pterygoplichthys and hypostomus genus.

It's some kind of Hypostomus... some are hard to tell apart due to they are similar looking in nature.
