Hey guys tuning my 500 gallon system and am having trouble quieting my 2 overflows. I am using the H2overflow which is drilled into the back of the tank and elbowed down behind the tank and under the stand into the sump. I have 2 of these installed so two separate 1.5" drains running down to the sump. Here is a loud rushing water sound through the pipes that is irritating even from the front side of the tank. Is there a way to reduce this slushing/leaky toilet sound that is constant? Thanks

Look up Herbie style overflow. Also, on youtube, search for "silencing durso". "brian franklin" posted a video showing how he used a valve on a durso to make it run pretty silent, too.

Herbie's kinda hard to explain in a post like this, but I run it and have alotta experience with it. I can answer your questions if you decide to go that route.

My tank has already been drilled in the rear and I like the setup because I maximize the footprint space inside the tank. Would the durso silencing method work on this type of overflow. It's basically strainer, then elbow into bulkhead inside the tank. Then elbow to bulkhead on the back outside facing down. Then pipe running down the back of the tank and down under into the sump.

I don't know, I've never run a durso. i just very recently saw that durso video and was surprised how quiet it was.

How many holes are drilled? Have you considered a coast-to-coast overflow box? Inside or outside the tank? You could definitely run silent with that.

I have two holes drilled about 3 inches from the top of the tank on the left and right middle portion of the back panel. There is an elbow facing up on each bullhead with the h2 overflow strainer connected to it. Then on The back side of each bulkhead which are on the outside of the tank is an elbow facing down and then pipe ran down the back of the tank and under into the sump. The water flow through the pipes seems to be my problem. How would the coast to coast silent it? I kind of like this setup just was wondering if there was a way to quiet the river flowing sound through the pipes

The overflow wouldn't silence it, but it'd give you the ability to plumb a Herbie or Beanimal.

I'd try a T connected to the back of the bulkhead. Cap the side pointing to the ceiling, drill a hole in it, and put some kinda ball/needle valve on it--durso type setup.

Try it see if it works--cost you $10 in parts and a little time. Start a thread here, take plenty of pics and video, show us how it works and let us see how quiet you can get it to run.

If that doesn't work, put a coast-to-coast and run 3 (or 6) drains Beanimal style.

Wow great advice here I'm just confused on the ball/needle valve after drilling a hole on top of the cap. What size hole? What exactly do I put in the hole?

It sounds like what's happening is that your drain pipes aren't getting full siphon. Before I "tuned" my Herbie set-up (for internal overflow), I was getting water squishing noise in my primary drain pipe as it was not low enough to get a full siphon AND I had to adjust the gate vale to control the flow of water - understand how you feel. Do you have any valves on your PVC drain flowing to the sump?

For your case, I think what's being suggested to add the "T" and tubing (red) in the picture to help quiet the water flow? As you can see this was on beananimal.com.

the guy in the youtube video explains and shows the valve he used on his Durso to make it run quiet.

Thanks for the info that seems like a complex setup. Can the same be achieved with just a t and pipe on the bottom and pipe and cap on top?
