A thought occurred to me this morning, when I was disposing of the remains of my biggest barb. RIP Claude, you suicidal fool.

I've been working on plans to make a conrete block tropical tank, lined with pond liner; what about using a fibreglass pond, made to measure, and installing a viewing window in it? I could build it like a normal pond (only in a garage), raised up with brick walls. It'd make the fiddly bit of lining it that much easier, and probably more interesting for the fish too if it had different levels in it.

Thoughts anyone? Don't know if it would work out any cheaper than the original plan (looking at about a 6-700g setup) but I would think I could be more certain that it'd hold the volume of water? There's a fair bit of paranoia going into this project! :nilly:

Done right, with the proper bracing, it would be fine.

There are several plywood / glassed tanks on here, have you seen those?

As far as cost goes, it depends on how good of a scounger you are :D. Anything you can get for free or discounted is a plus.

Have you done 'glass work before?

I have been perusing the other threads, fabulous stuff!

I did toy with the plywood idea briefly but due to the aforementioned paranoia and the eventual planned size of this thing I don't think I'd feel all that comfortable about having such a large build out of plywood/glass.

I've not worked with fibreglass before, it's all new to me. Figured I'd either find a nice, cheap second-hand pond or have one made, depending on the cost. Last year I did manage to get a 60" x 36" x 18" pond for all of £26 (about $50), alas it was chucked as I couldn't transport it to my new home. But it can be done!

Edited to add: at a push I could probably hire my brother - he's very familiar with 'glass ins and outs, but he's a pain in the hiney for building projects - constantly coming up with ways to do things that are nothing like what you want him to do, poo-pooing your ideas or trying to change the design completely. And, he works at a snail's pace and would probably come with a few kids in tow. So I'm trying to avoid that!
