I found a new spot today, landed 7 species (bluegill, black and white crappie, pumkinseed sunfish, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and common carp) all on a size 8 clouser swimming nymph. Here are some of the highlights...

30" carp, my best common so far....

And a bluegill I really wanted a picture of, unfortunately pics don't do it justice, it was really a pretty fish, albeit not very big...

I also caught my first pumkinseed on a fly, but I didn't take any pictures of (not really sure why, it was a nice looking fish.)

Thanks for looking!

The picture of the carp needs to be turned, which is why it looks weird, but I dont know how lol

Sweet and did I read that right. You caught a carp on a fly?

Yep, flyfishing for carp is quite a rush. Carp rely heavily on their sense of smell, so getting them to take something by sight can be a real challenge compared to tossing out a gob of crawlers or a doughball.

I don't know if you've heard of bonefish, but a lot of fly guys call carp golden bones or freshwater bonefish because fishing for tailing and rooting carp is very similar to fishing for bones. I've never caught a bonefish so I can't say for certain if thats true or not. People pay thousands of dollars to travel to exotic locations for bonefish, yet many people will kill every carp they can. Personally, I think carp are a ton of fun on fly gear or conventional tackle.

you just got to get a lake sturgeon now on fly...thats about the only thing i can't seem to get...the only reason i can't get them on fly is the place they hold up to spawn is a fish sanctuary...and with all the thousands of hours i log in on the river i can't seem to see them, yet when i cast to the same 5' deep spot from the bank that i sit and watch for them i can catch them like no tomarrow...i love to get carps on the fly i find that large brown/yellow wolly buggers work the best and they are a way to fun on fly...the sturgeon would be the all time best though...

A sturgeon on a fly would be epic! We dont have them in CO and I've never caught them anywhere else either. I would think something big, bushy, and heavy worked tight to the bottom might be a good bet. Do they ever get them on lures?

they get them on jigging rigs in the winter...they are a very curious fish and often bite things to see what it is...i have seen them snagged in the nose after following a lure in shallow water...i saw the lure running then a big wake to the lure, then the fish was hooked...i get them on crawlers

Hit the same spot again this afternoon, and had another great day!

I got my first golden shiner on a fly! Yeah, its generally considered a baitfish but it slammed my fly and its another species to add to the list!

I also got another little pumkinseed...

And my second (and largest) cat on a fly...

Unfortunately it got me GOOD with not one but TWO of its spines, blood everywhere and it was all mine.

This guy made it worth it though, another common carp that went 30"! A little skinnier than the other one but still a pretty solid fish!
