So I decided to try out some discus since my LFS had them on a buy 2 get one free. Had the water parameters right, ph was a little high but I acclimated them to it slowly. First few days, they were doing very well, then I got home one day and found one dead. Ok, so the freebie is gone. Bummer they won't take it back cause its beyond thier return policy. O well. 2 more days go by and find another one dead. Got one left now and so far its been doing great by itself. So I have a few other severums to trade in and go to another LFS and see 5 red koi angelfish in a tank. Worked a deal with the owner to give him the severums and take the 5 angels for 60 bucks. Get them home, and put them in the tank, first few days they are doing great, then I see one hanging at the surface with clamped fins, quarantined, dies a day later, then every day after that, one after the other they all die except one. Now I have one angelfish and one discus in my 75 and am worried about even spending more money on either.

I would put money on you having amonia spikes or causing amonia spikes when you dobled the bio load of the tank over night. When you stated losing the angles did you do water tests and water changes.

I did, before and for a few days after, and the parameters were perfect, no ammonia, nitrite or nitrate, ph was at about 7.6.

Edit: The tank had two cycled filters on it and they had been running for a better part of a year. Shouldn't have been any issues with the params.

Kinda off the subject but I have heard that mixing discus with angels is a bad idea.

The discus were alone in the tank. When I got to one discus, I trfrd it to a 20 tall by itself and the angels were added days later to the 75, they have only been together now since I only have 2 fish left.

And from what I have read onlilne, many say not to do it, and some say its fine. The reasons are with disease, but many diseases that would affect these 2 fish are generally only found in wild caught fish.

Got it. I've never had good luck with LFS bought discus either. If I get any now I will order from a breeder or wild caught.

If you are reading 0ppm for nitrate your tank isnt cycled. How are you testing? Api master kit or test strips?

on a side note a tank with enopgh plant filtration will read 0. But a normal tank will not

I realize this. Its also possible with a very lightly stocked tano. However a tank going through this much change in stocking/die offs it os highly unlikely

I use a master test kit and the tank is planted. It is cycled, I have tested the water for days and haven't had any spikes. It has 2 AC110's on it and they are lowered each to 300gph.
