Well this am I decided to clean my fx5, so I drained it and took it aparts and on the bottom was a bunch of sand so immediately I starting taking out the sand! What a pain in the rear that was!!! 50 pounds of play sand I had to drain out almost 75 percent of my water to get almost all of it... Now I have gone through gravel, "dmack" stones, play sand... I don't know what to use... I may just keep it bare bottom with a lot of large rocks... At least it would be easier to clean...
Thanks for listening to my rant...

i love sand bottom tanks!!! but i love bare bottom tanks as well!!! either way it looks good!!! win/win situation IMO

Are you losing space for bb if you use bare bottom instead of coated gravel or normal gravel? Or is it not a significant loss....

yeh get rid of the sand bro. i had it once and it stuffed up my sump.. it works for some but not for others.. BB is a nice look too.

do bare bottom and put down gloss or flat black ceramic tiles

Yes and no ;) Still have all 5 walls of the tank that BB gathers on ;) And the filter which is the main area...

im going to do this for my next project as well.. i think im going to go gloss and just sit them on the bottom so i can clean underneath them if i have too.. i have a tile cutter so i am going to cut a half moon ect for around the over flow and to fit tiles perfectly
