I was wondering if it would be alright to use a AC 70 Impeller in an AC 50 HOB filter? I know they are the same motor, but the intake pipe and box are smaller. Has anyone done this before or know if it is ok to do this?

What if I was to replace the shaft to the shaft for the 70? The reason I would like to, is because I have a sand bottom and the 70 does not seem to have the same problem of have sand in the motor. Was wondering if this was due to the propeller size difference?

I don't think they are compatible. I thought the magnet size was larger on the 70 - I may be wrong. The best defense against sand is to keep your intake well above it, or if you have sand moving fish, place a sponge over the intake, that being said, you'd have to keep that sponge clean to keep flow up. Sorry, i don't think i answered your question :)

I appreciate all the information, whether it directly answers my question or not. Sponge cover definitely appreciated, crazy the common sense things seem to always escape me. From a trial, non-operative, everything seemed to fit fine and they are the exact same motors 20, 30, 50 and 70. The Impeller shaft thing I obviously could not tell without operating it. But the Magnets are the same circumference atleast. Being that I am not home for about 10 hours daily I am nervous to set it up and risk it...

Just so everyone knows; spoke with a long tenured customer rep at Hagen and they said it will work just fine to have the 70 impeller in the 50. Going to try it out this wekend. Will post how it works out!

So, I have had the 70 Impeller in the AC 50 for about a week now and has been working great. it did take a tad of fabricating, I just had to file about a cenimeter off the tops of the fan blades. This will alieviate the noise problem, yes it will decrease the total gph output, but still stronger than the AC 50 fan blade. Hope this is useful to someone!
