My LFS has a ton of SPS frags that look really nice, but I am not sure about the hair algae on some of them. Does this not lead to the demise of the frag itself?

Hair algae can over-run corals. I would bother buying them, even in a good state, it really shows your LFS dedication to his livestock.

this company is a wholesale company that is open to the public on fridays and saturdays. some items are top notch while others, including some SPS, are lacking.

If there is hair algae growing on the corals themselves that means two things. 1. Not enough flow around the corals. 2. The coral is struggling and may actually have some dead areas that the algae can grow on easily.

Obviously don't buy any corals that don't look good, but if there are healthy specimens look at those.

If a coral is being overcome by hair algae you need to work on h2o quality and your cuc.

I hope this gets resolved soon.

No hair algae in my tank :). I was talking about a local LFS.
