I read an article saying that someone had successfully kept a pair of convicts with a hairy puffer. I had an extra pair and gave it a shot. After watching for an hour everything seemed fine. Went out for a smoke, came back and there was only half of one convict left. It was in a 55 gallon. These hairy puffers are sneaky bandits. It has not gone after any malaysian trumpet snails that I have seen so that is definitely a cheap option for a planted tank and they do a good job keeping my glass and surfaces clean. image.jpeg

Coold oddball puffer! Yea...mistakes happen but live and learn. Never repeat them.

Yep these dudes are little psychos... My old one from 5-6 years ago would attack anything that came into the tank, or just puffer up and bite at his own reflection! I have just picked up a new one last week and he is in a 80g so might try a large catfish and see what happens...the guy in the lfs say he is the calmest hairy he has ever seen and shared a tank in the shop with a spiny eel for months.

The reason a hairy puffer doesnt go after snails is because they are a piscivore by nature, which is also why the convict ended up in half...

Gotta also remember these guys are also semi ambush hunters so they like attacking unsuspecting tankmates from below...
