hey all, i recently aquired a hairy puffer and have been see contradicting results about their teeth... do i need to feed any particular foods to keep them worn or is this a species that i can feed softer frozen foods such as mussel and prawn without a worry? i can buy bulk trumpet snails online here in the uk would that be adequate?

I don't think that it should be an issue, but I haven't kept this species. The lurker species (target puffers, congos, humpbacks, arrowheads, etc.) don't get overgrown teeth. They are piscivorous, but also eat occasional crustaceans. Feed some crayfish or crunchy items every once in a while and it should be fine.
That was one reason I picked a hairy is because dental care is not quite an issue. I feed shrimp in the shell and have also used crab in shell to give him some foods to crunch on. The rest of what he gets is soft like earthworms, clams out of shell, tilapia fillet, a small treat of krill. Care should be taken with krill, there are reports of lockjaw setting in with puffers fed a diet high in krill. He only gets krill like once a month. Dont know how true that is but not going to risk it.
The MTS snails are not a good idea because their shell is too hard and besides the hairy probably would not go after them anyways. Mine wont eat pellets but I will make an incision into the shrimp and stuff a couple pellets in there to make sure he gets those missing nutrients. A couple usually fall out but I do see he gets a few into him.
