Haitiens Black Nasty

Why would you want to do that?

I'm sure you could, but as touchy as they are I wouldn't risk the fluctuation in water parameters when doing water changes.

They need a clean, stable environment in order to not get stressed out and bloat. Contrary to popular belief, haitiensis bloat is more related to stress than solely diet.

purchased a 60 gal and it came with crushed coral mixed with natural gravel. the mix of both gravel looks nice....if it is okay i'd leave the gravel...water staying clean will be no problem. but stable with high ph i'm not sure if they prefer that or not? bloat...so far so good.

Crushed coral buffers hardness and pH levels and keeps them constant. Moreover, Central American cichlids come from slightly alkaline waters.
