I have always struggled to get Haitiensis in the UK but have 2 people offering me them now.

Been offered 10 for £25.00 delivered (thats including postage) 2" in size and I have pics of the parents as well.

The thing is... I have 2 young Dovii that I was planning on growing up.....

I would need to move the Dovii on .... what would you do.

Will have the room in a 200 + gallon tank for either......

What would you do. I know the nasty does not look as nice as the Dovii IMO, but it doesnt get as big and is more manageable..... Its still a lovely looking chunky fish as well.

I have had Haitiensis in the past but they came into the shop SOOOOO rarely and were usually females.

HELP ME.......

It depends on the genetics of the haitiensis because all that ive worked with up untill the last year or so have been prone to bloat, but there are some floating around now that seem to be healthier now and i havent seen bloat in my recent groups at all. a 200 would be more than sufficient for a pair of Haitiensis and dovii are really easy to obtain. i would say get a nice group of 10-12 haits and grow them out to get pairs then make some money back on the rest. and in the meant time you my find extra room for another tank down the road and can try Dovii again:) i agree that dovii are beautiful but i also love Haits and if you can end up with a healthy pair id go that route. good luck

Thanks mate.

I am soooo confused like.

I really do love Dovii and they will be going into a 84-30" tank or tropical pond set up if I keep them in a few years,,,,, I just think that the Dovii I have now are the best coloured I have ever seen and I have put up with a bit to get them to not kill each other lol

I am going to try and get another grow out tank for the Haits so I can try and keep both.

thats even a better idea. the dovii will color up for you, some are just late bloomers. and once the male gets bigger than the female they will pair out too:)

Male haits are amazing looking fish. Females tend to be more "nasty" though. I had a bit of a problem with bloat trying to grow out some juveniles in the past.

You have to go easy on the protein withh the nasties, go with more of a spirulina flake with carnivore pellet 2 days a week. Dovi are easy to obtain so if it were me I would go with the hatiensis myself.

Grow the haits in another tank, and if possible subdivide it so they can't get to each other.
I had 20 young that ended up as 1 adult due to bloat. Stress of being together seems to me to be a root cause of bloat.
Low protein as others said and a bit higher temp than normal may better your chances.

If you can get another tank and try to keep both, that'd be great, but if you had to choose one, I'd go with the Haits, just because of how much rarer it is to see full-grown Haits than Dovii.

In the end though, keep the fish that you're going to enjoy the most.
