Hi everyone. I've only had ich a few times and only lost a few fish everytime. However, I treated the fish with Kordon Ich Plus. More than half of my fish died. The tank is 186 gallons and I do a 25% water change every 3 days. I'm going to move them in a bigger tank but all the fish a still small. This is what was in the tank: 3 small parrots (dead), 1 small shovel nose (dead), 2 out of 6 bala sharks (dead), 1 small silver Aro (still alive), 1 Jardini (still alive), and 2 small oscars (alive). The Aro and Jardini have a little spots and the Jardini has a frayed tail. Both oscars and both Aros are still alive and they are all eating. I'm surprised that the oscars didn't seem to get ich because I'v never seen spots on it and act normally. Please help. I don't know what to do this time. Thanks, Ed.

Pics might help. To cure ich a very effective treatment is aquarium salt and heat. Do a large 50% water change. Raise the temp to 86F and dose with aquarium salt at a rate of 1 tbls. per 5 gallons of aquarium water. You should see results in a few days. Ich sometimes appears to get worse befor it gets better. If you change water during treatment redose with salt to maintane recommended dosage. Treat this way for 10 days.

Thanks regarding using salt. I was afraid of using salt because I've never tried it. I've always used Kordon it has worked but now I'm going try the salt treatment. Thank you, Ed.

I treated ick using kordon and it made the symptoms go away quickly but they kept coming back. Using salt and heat, and treating for 2 weeks is the only way I was able to keep it from coming back. Remember the parasite is alive for days after symptoms go away due to the various stages of its life cycle. Also, I found it helpful to do a big water change before dosing (50% like aquanero suggested) and then I would do 20% every day or every other day to keep the water as pristine as possible, but not so much that you create more stress for you fish, and dont forget to salt the replacement water too.
