Halogens?

can they be used to successfully grow plants?
Just curious, I bought a 300watt halogen shop light at Lowes and was gonna try it out.
 
Halogens use way too much power and put out way too much heat to be able to work efficiently on your planted tank. Not to mention that halogen shop lights are designed for short-term use under dry conditions. You're better off using lights specific to horticultural use than trying to reinvent the wheel yourself.

someone did a little test over at plantedtank about using halogens and was able to row alot of plants but you have to mount them high like metal halides to keep the heat down. the color temperature was the biggest problem, but they had found some 6500K halogens
