Anyone use these filters? Im always curious about different filters but since i mostly keep plecos it seems the filter would clog quickly with all the poop. What do you guys think would be the best filter for my 75? Right now it has 2 aquaclear 110's and they get nasty and can get messy cleaning the filter pads. I was thinking about going with a sump and some filter socks.

I used them for a while in my smaller breeder tanks. Loved them, but the "cheaper option" foam that I bought began to break down in the water, so I had to toss them. Other than that, they were good. You would probably have to clean them a bit more often with heavier bioload fish. in essence, the same as a sponge filter.

I'm using the Poret foam as Mattenfilters in six 30G tanks and will be using them in the new fish room if I ever get the plumbing finished.

I like these filters but the only downside I've had with them is when it comes time to clean them. They hold a large amount of fine dirt and quite a bit of water so it's a bit messy when removing them from the tank, especially when my tanks are set up on a rack with not quite enough clearance between the levels.

Cleaning the HMF's depends on how quickly they get clogged so it varies between the tanks. I know that isn't a satisfactory answer but it is what it is. I know the filter is clogged because the water level behind the HMF is substantially lower than it is in front of the HMF. Three of the tanks had the HMF cleaned once per year and the other three, once in 2 years.

I am currently keeping Tanganyika shell dwellers in all six tanks, the fish spawn regularly and I feed twice daily with NLS pellet food.

I have a ton of acoustic foam. I'm not sure how it was made, but does anyone know if I could use it in the tank with my fish?

My algae scrubber has done a fantastic job, however, I would still like to try a giant sponge filter in my sump to help prevent my return pump from clogging.

If you know the brand of foam, check their website to see if it is treated with anything. It might be treated with a mildewcide or insecticide depending on its original purpose.
