Hammerhead Catfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice video.
As Jay said, they are most likely Ageneiosus Marmoratus. I have kept single specimens, but I found them more active in groups. Mine often swam against the outputs; they seemed to like the current and sometimes lined up along the spraybar. I've never seen them over 12". They are not very aggressive, but they can swallow large fish.

Thanks,

Planet catfish says they max at 11.8 inches I have toyed with pulling mine out and measuring because i think he is at least 12 inches.

It could be any fish from the genus of Ageneiosus http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/genus.php?genus_id=105#714 - click and explore.

The smallest is ~2". The biggest is ~2'. A. marmoratus (max SL standard length ~12", TL total length ~15") indeed appears to be by very, very far most available and sold in the trade.

I'd suggest checking out PlanetCatfish, ScotCat, FishBase, SeriouslyFish, AquaticCommunity, LiveAquaria, Wikipedia, etc. and coming back with concrete questions :) No sense in re-typing what's available to all.

Can somebody explain why they are so expensive?

They are not common and relatively touchy in transport and acclimatization = losses. Also, I think I've never seen small babies for sale, only 5"-6" TL = expensive shipping. A. marmoratus' usual price at an LFS $60-$90.
