I just got my 3 1/2" baby silver to take freeze dried plankton from my hand today  . I've had him for about a month now. He's grown about an inch, and was always VERRRRRRY skittish. Last Thursday though, I introduced three small (about 1 1/2") Geophagus surinamensis to the tank to act as dithers to try to calm him and it has worked tremendously. It's only been about 4 days with them, but the aro is showing a complete 180 degree turnaround.

Just thought I'd share the story. I think handfeeding is a great way to get your aro calmed down and accustomed to you. It makes tank maintnance a lot less stressful for both you and your fish when he's not freaking out the whole time. I'm trying to get a good pic of him but he wont hold still long enough.

Yes. most fish are skittish on their own. But a few tankmates can really change his attitude...

Yeah, he's the first aro I have had come around so quickly. He's also the first one that I've had that will eat absolutely anything that goes into the tank. He'll eat pellets, crill, bloodworms, brine shrimp, even flakes. I'm really diggin this guy.

Then I would advise feeding him as much pellet as you can. avoid live feed for a while.

Good job on understanding your fishes behavior.

Hi, guys , I've been in and around these guys for several years and ,I 'm quite impressed , this gives me something to rerally shoot for with my little guys ,( four & five inches) with even smaller arapimas , it hard to govern that food w/ redtail at the bottom.
However that great news that I gonna give a try .Good job!
