with regards to hangon tank canister filters, are they strictly meant for the side of the tank? or can it be put underneath the tank and run hoses up to the tank? will it have the power?

I asked the flip-flop question (raining the canister above the tank) a week ago and was told it was fine. So I suspect having the canister lower would work, too, but I wonder if it would be under too much pressure and pop down there...

that was my main concern. but u said it worked up top. i might look into that. thanks

I wouldn't. Even if it didn't leak or pop open, the pump was not designed to be under pressure and could very quickly burn out. Not to mention the loss in turn over/performance do to being designed to operate at zero head height. HOT magnum 250's are great HOB filters as are AC110's. Do you not have room behind the tank to run one?

I guess it would work, but why would you. They have canister filters for that very reason.........

A canister fitler placed below the tank is under static pressure. This static pressure can increase the PSI within the can, which can challenge the seal of the filter. Meaning it can leak.

If the filter is not designed to be that far beneath the tank, I would personally not take the risk of running it as such...

As suggested above, I would simply use a filter that is designed to be placed below the tank for below the tank applications...

im running 2 electric filters pushing about 150 gph. i know thats not enuf for my 75 gallon. ive heard the filtration should push 4x the size of the tank and hour. i also looked at the HOT magnum 250's and those are the ones im probl going to get. a stupid mistake i made was that i set up the stand and tank, filled it, THEN put the filters on. barely fit em back there. rite now i think i have about 6-7 inches behind the tank. idk. im not home rite now to check. how big is the HOT magnum 250? will it fit? i cant find dimensions for it to save my life

The only HOB with canister type media I can imagine are the Aquaclear's. Specifically the AC110. Great at doing what they do, but I don't think the pumps can handle the head pressure. I've been experimenting a lot with using old HOB pumps to recycle them into Over-Tank Sumps... and so far I have not been able to add more than 6" of height to the pickup/intake pipe before it can no longer support the water weight/head pressure. In your version of this application, you will be hard pressed make it work under the tank. As the distance the water has to move would require such a long pipe that it would create a very large strain on the pump. Kinda like trying to breathe through a garden hose. Sure you can do it... but not for long.

I just measured one of my HOT mag 250's and you will need about 6" from the wall to tank, MAX, probably closer to 5". Honestly, put the fish in a bucket, empty the water and scoot it away from the wall until your happy. That is what I do. Lesson learned on too close the the wall on a few tanks of my own. :)

ima measure up the distance when i get home tomorrow and see if i need to move it. i probly will anyway just incase something falls back there. i was also thinking if i take evrything out to move it i might want to paint the back of the tank black. whats everybodys thoughts on that?
