I always used them and i'm very happy with the results. Water is always clean, and they are easy to work on. I know pp don't like the noice but mine are pretty quiet for the most part. I run 3 emperor 400's on my 125g, penguin 350+150 on my 55g, and a penguin 350 on my 30g. I was going to get a fx5 for the 125g but im glad i didn't because of the cost. I saved $150 buy using the 3 emperors. One day i will switch to canister filters because i hear of all the great results, but for now im happy.

Agreed, I also have 3 E-400's running on the tank I sleep next too, and I must admit as long are you maintainyour filters they dont make much noise at all. I still alwaysunplug the airstonebefore I go to bed though.

Yupp, I use sponges in my filters insted of the disposable filter pads, works 100X better. I stick some filter media in the bottom and presto! Awesome filter that even the smallest things cant get through.

I do have a powerhead in there aswell, my fish likes to play and swim through the bubbles throughout the day and night, but if I dont unplug it I cant fall asleep.

I actually bought a canister filter for my 40 gallon breeder, and honestly I think I might like HOB filter's better. With plant filtration, and water changes there is honestly no reason to have a canister filter, and it's annoying as hell to clean. I think there are enough alternative methods to keeping a tank's water quality in check that there's really no reason to have a big filter, other than adding water movement.

I 100% agree. On my next tank I'm just gonna get some hob filters. My rena canister is a pain too clean. My hob filters on my 10 & 20 take less then 5 minutes to clean and its so damn easy!! No more crawling on the floor into a tight space with water dripping everywhere hauling buckets at 45 pounds each. I have school homework you know!

I love hobs if your worried about bio ,a sponge filter will fix that problem ,as an add on filter

What powerhead brand do you use? I have a maxijet and it's almost dead quiet. My emp400 make more noise than the maxijet. I like hob filters but for any tank over 100g I would recommend canisters. I love my eheim pro 2 canister. It's amazingly quiet.
