Ive read its possible Ick or maybe intenal parasites .. but what do you all think??

Only one of the 2 mooris does the rubbing of the sand .. its very quick and only happens every 20-30mins or so so not often.

She looks perfectly healthy, good colour, eats non stop and eyes look good. There is a tiny mark on her side probably from rubbing herself of the sand.

Shes 3" in a 125g tank with

40 other 1 1/2" small mbunas, a few tiger barbs.

Amm 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 5
Ph 8-0

50% water change weekly
1200gph filters

Temp 25oC

Only she does the rubbing out of all 40+ fish ... do you think some melafix is needed or some form of salts?

Hey Mike,

Defo not breeding as she does it by herself away from the other moori .. would aquarium salt or something like cichlid conditioning salt? Ta

salts help in alot of ways, but I always use salts in my 125 african tank, My water parameters are perfect just as yours, I do 30% water changes weekly, and my fish do the same thing. 2 in particular. They are very healthy also and Have been in my tank for a long time. I dont know what it is either, I have come to terms with maybe they are just ichy lol. keep an eye on him for any other signs of sickness. I personally wouldnt medicate him just yet, and If you do, I wouldnt dose the entire tank, put him in a small hospital tank and dose. but for now you can try salting, IMO the benifits of salting are incredible. Controls parasites, maintains there natural slimecoat, aids in healing wounds and I have seen fins heal very quickly after adding salt. And in my own experience I have not lost a fish due to sickness in the past few years since introducing salt into my tanks. only human error and/or equipment failure :-(

my fish do it sometimes too, but i think it comes from sifting sand for food particles and there pushing sand through there gills. I think the sand (3m colorquartz) irritates them.

This is normal usually my most dominant africans do this even when salt is added. Its just what they do. the only thing that worries me is he is actually hurting himself doing it. Might be a problem with some type of parasite they don't have to look sick to have one.
