I got this in a tank of Obliquidens at the LFS and i'm just trying to get an ID on it if possible. I think it's a Haplochromis sp. "Dayglow", but just wanted to get others thoughts. He is about 2" long right now and i'm going to get him some female companions soon to bring out his true colors more.

Nope, definitely not a Xystichromis (Haplochromis) Dayglow. That's a Haplochromis Obliquidens AKA Sp. 44, thick skin hap or Hap. redtail.

I'm not sure thats what it is. The stripes don't look quite right, I don't see the blotch on the gill plate...the fact stripe is not as bold as it should be. It could be due to the size, but I'm going to guess its not the "dayglow". Looks more sp.44 to me

When he was in the tank with the others in the store, he had very dark lines on his face and on the bottom. I need to go get 2-3 of those females to try and bring out his colors and maybe get a better picture huh....

He use to flare up with colors to the Moorii, but not that he/she doesn't give him any thought, he doesn't flare up to the moorii anymore lol.

It's a Haplochromis sp. 44 as stated, looks nice though, but not a dayglow. Dayglows are pretty hard to find and can be obtained only by breeders or online vendors.

I agree, its not a dayglow. Like I said that fish is missing some key elements that would be visible whether or not it was in the presence of females.

very nice fish though

Thank you all for the fast response. I want to get some more and now know what to get thanks to you guys. I'll post up some more pics when I pick up the rest in the next few days. Him and the Moorii get along great.

Awesome can't wait to see the pics, glad we could help :)

I find them to be super easy breeders, so get ready for some babies :)

No problem. ;) Once you pick up the rest and make your colony, be sure to get pics. :)

Too late for the ID I guess. But he looks good!:D
