In my first months of fishkeeping, I had a big female betta alone in a 40g tall for a long time. She was always sprinting back and forth and wiggling at me. I suspect she was thankful for the room, but who knows. I only say this to illustrate that it's a fine idea.

Yeah. She was a gigantic white female with a blue and red crowntail. Her tail was really stumpy-looking, though, because her body was so thick and long.

The maintenance was a breeze, though! One medium filter and a tiny water change every week. She did well until I moved her into a ten gallon to make room for a goldfish test I was doing. I think the relative confinement was too much of a contrast. She just sulked for the rest of her days... Sad really...

So she wasn't the happiest in the world then?

bit of a waste of space if you ask me

Just cause bettas can survive in small tanks doesnt mean its best.Glad you gave the fish a good life.

We have a rescued male betta in our 125g discus tank. He hangs out under the frogbit most of the time but you will some times see him swim down to flare at a discus then go on his way.

Like I said mine hangs out under the frogbit(floating plant) , he only swims to the bottom when he gets adventurous.
