Hard and soft water

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well im not sure how to explain it exactly. but i can explane what it is sorta, soft water is low ph water below 7parts per million, its acidic often with little mineral content in the water. and can harm most fish if below 6 parts per million, some fish from flooded forest areas benifit from soft water, such fish as bettas, most tetras (cardinals, neons, piranhas, goliath tiger fish) . but the best thing about low ph soft water is that it natually detoxifys ammonia because ammonia turns into ammonium when in a ph below 6.8ppm, ammonium is nonharmful to fish and is eaten by plants including alge.

hard water is high ph water above 7ppm, is mineral rich with little acid in the water, and can harm most fish if ph is above 8.5ppm. the higher the ph the more toxic ammonia becomes, some fish that are from hard water areas will benifit from salt as well or at least can tollerate salt better, like guppies, platies, african cichlids.

but sense most fresh water fish are tank rased and have been for many generations there often not that sensitive to ph, gh, or kh so most likly it doesnt matter what your ph, or gh is. im not sure if this helps or not but thats what i got
