I picked up a used 45 gal tank and stand. It's pretty decent but on the outside where they had a kind of holographic background there is this bad stain, for lack of a better word. I think the background had gotten wet and some nasty stuff is stuck on the back of the tank. Vinegar and a razor blade doesn't touch this stuff. When I get it wet it looks like it disappears but as soon as it dries it's back uglier than ever! Any ideas on how to get rid of it?

Thats the beauty of glass tanks, when they are filled with water most defects and scratches disappear. I would suggest scrubbing as much as possible to get it to that point, as long as you cant see it once its full of water, you're good.

If it is an acrylic tank, go get some Novus 1 and a nice set of microfiber cloths and buff it out. I have a 150 gal that is in terrible cosmetic shape that I am going to refinish hopefully this weekend. Just make sure you use smooth, gentle strokes Karate Kid styleand you should be golden. A new wool pad on a low speed random orbital buffer with Novus works too.

i used limeaway on my tank, plus a razor blade with great success. just be sure to rinse really well.

Vinegar and baking soda. I clean all my filters and stuff with vinegar. You wouldnt believe how much of a difference that makes. I just bought a tank with 5 powerheads and all sorts of other little things. Soaked em for a day or so and they look brand new! Covered in hard water stains. Soak a paper towel in vinegar and set it over it. Hope that helps.

Sorry didnt see you already used vinegar... put both the baking soda and vinegar together. might help...

Yeah but this is on the back side of the outside of the tank.

Limeaway works great on hard water stains. Just rinse it well.
