when they talk about fish and if they need soft water or hard. what is soft water and hard water. how do you check to see what youe have. how would you change it if you have one and want the other.

hard water has lots of minerals in it. Lots of minerals raises and/or stabilizes pH. General Hardness water test kits and Alkalinity water test kits are ideal for testing hardness. They can be found at many pet stores.

non-specialist/serious fishkeepers want a high level of general hardness and high-to-very-high alkalinity. specialists/serious keepers, on the other hand, may be trying to breed fish that only breed in soft water, for example.

0-4 ° GH very soft
4-8° GH soft
8-12° GH medium
12-30° GH hard
30++° GH very hard
