Hi there, I recently acquired a Saratoga leichardti. The water he came in was 3500ppm tds and 10gh.

I adjusted my tank to 1000ppm tds (tap water is 80ppm!) with Epsom salts and aquasonic. He's settled in well but I have 28gh. Should I soften this fairly quickly or just do daily water changes with the soft water both diluting tds and gh?
I'm aiming for a gh of around 12 degrees and the tds I'm not too worried about if it's brought down gradually...

I would adapt the fish to my water. Usually I get fish in, slice the bag, dump in a net to get rid of the old water and dump them in an aquarium. I usually equalize temp or anything. Dump and plop. That includes my Lei, to be more specific.

I prefer to setup a quarantine tank and match most of the parameters from the bag. With tds I make sure I have at least got it up a bit. Then do water changes to bring it back to my specs. I'm assuming the gh reading is high due to the mg in the Epsom salts. Does high mg affect fish or will they only take what they need?
