Soak in vinegar. Then sometimes I’ll carefully use something blunt to “chip” chunks off. But normally a good soaking loosens it enough that most will rub off fairly easy.

Muriatic acid makes quick work of it, just pull the shaft out if its metal.

So, muriatic acud attack’s steel?
It’s an iwaki pump and I’m pretty sure the impeller is over molded on the metal shaft.
I’ll need to take it apart again and check it out.
Maybe I should but an extra impeller assembly so I can change it out to clean like you do with filter socks.

Any acid will attack steel, to some extent. If you can't pull the shaft out then I wouldn't worry about it too much. You're not going to leave it in the acid for days, just a few minutes.
