Moving to a new house next month with city water that comes out of the tap at Alkalinity: 58 mg/l
Hardness: 153mg/l
PH: 9.0 S.U.

I have an ornate and senegal now (4-5") and will be putting them in a 125g or 180g at the new house. I looked through the sticky and didn't see much that would be a hard water type, so I need suggestions. I will have a lot of driftwood in the tank so that should buffer the PH at least a little. My idea was CA cichlids, but I need some that are large but peaceful enough.

Any ideas?

Lordy 9.0?!?!?! That's really high. Polys won't be a problem short term. Perhaps the cichlid guys here can chime in, but beleive its ok short term as well. Lots of seeded driftwood and natural peat to buffer recommended.

I have six big pieces of driftwood and plan to put peat or something similar in my canister filter to bring PH down a little, but its never going to get into the range of South American cichlids which would be the easy choice.

what about African Cichlids? I think those are 8.2+

yeah 9 is really high.

would RODI unit help alter pH?

Not really too into Africans, plus it seems like they would be a little to aggressive to go with the bichirs?

I'm trying to find fish that will work with my water rather than modify the water if at all possible.

Good idea. Trying to change your tap water to match the fish long term is a headache. Ca would be my only gues. Better off posting in that section though the fish will probably adapt but thats like liquid rock lol
