We have well water that is naturally hard and basic and i was wondering if other than african rift lake cichlids, synos and mormyrids, are there any other fish that really like hard alkaline water?
Most fish can be acclimated to whatever comes out of your tap (except for the chlorine). When you buy a fish at a pet store near your home, it's unlikely that the store spent a lot of money and effort using RO water or special conditioners. Just know your parameters and have the store check theirs before you buy.
The pH is less important than the "hardness." Fortunately, if your water is hard and has a high pH, you have a lot of buffering capacity!
okay thanks but i really like to try to put my fish in conditions as close to those theyd find in nature as i find it easier for them to grow and breed
and
what exactly is buffering capacity anyway?
Buffering capacity is the water's ability to maintain a stable pH when acids are added (like decaying fish food, nitric acid from ammonia cycle, etc.)
The best way to evaluate your water is to buy a GH/KH test kit. Test pH, GH, and KH and report the results. Your idea of hard and basic might be different from mine!
