Setting up a new tank soon and I will be putting an older filter on it, so at worse I will have a short mini cycle occur.

would a leopard ctenopoma/bush fish/leaf fish, w.e you wanna call it be able to handle it?

I think I remember somewhere that there are kinda of weak when young and die for no reason but I can't find where I saw that. If they are weak it may change where I buy them from... like I won't buy them out of town bc if they die for no reason I will have to travel to get them exchanged.

Thanks for the help

I think you are talking about a Ctenopoma Acutirostre or Spotted Climbing Perch, I would not recommend putting one through a cycle, I just cleaned my filter and had a very very small mini cycle and he seemed very stressed (or because I have been removing my cichlids and he is just scared .:))

I would recommend picking up some guppies or tetras to do you cycle then when you add the Ctenopoma Acutirostre it will eat them.

i added tetras to my tank before i added my spotted bush fish but i only cycled the tank for 2 weeks but i kind of cheated i took an old under gravel filter out of another tank and put it in there with some of the water from the old tank which helped it cycle much faster but in my experience there pretty tuff just make sure you buy a healthy one
but one a side note i like south american leaf fish much better not as active but much more of a monster

Young leopard ctenopoma are very fragile. Depending on size, if its about 3-4" it can probably be used to cycle your tank. They get super hardy as they get bigger. Have you thought about using a biological booster or keeping some amquel+ or ammo lock ready?

I swear thers two 5" leopard ctenopomas in there!!!!!!!!!!!
