What does it mean by "lungfish seem to ignore PH and hardness"
does it have to do with water chemistry?

Recently I posted a thread on the South American lungfish area and BeBlondie has told me that.."pH: 4.5-7.5
dH: 0-12"
but what is dH?

and on aqualandpetplus, it said that AFRICAN lungfish seem to ignore PH and hardness, but does this go with SOUTH AMERICAN lungfish too?

Wow.... 4.5 for SA Lungfish.... I would never try it! lol

haha what do you mean by that?

guys/gals!! what is hardness??

Oh so it means that other fish are not strong against hard water?
and soft water is better for tropical fish?

the fish hobby is so confusing..

Fish are adapted to the water parameters from their natural environments. Some are hardier than others and can live in paramenters outside their natural environment. Some fish are from environments that change often so with that they have the ability to handle changes.

Some of the good bacteria in your tank stops working at a pH below 5. In which case ammonia just keeps rising. With the amount of ammonia a lungfish can produce, no need to say that's bad....

Ok thanks.

but i don't get what you mean...ammonia doesn't affect lungfish?

Ammonia effects every single kind of fish. The higher the pH, the more 'deadly', if you like, ammonia is. A lower pH usually fluctuates more. Lungfish live in conditions that change a lot, so it doesnt matter what you keep them in (It does, but just the usualy 6.5-7.8 ph). Also, they dont really care if the water is soft or hard.

there's another reason i'm starting to want lungfish!
thanks! are they good for beginners that don't care if they're on the bottom 24/7?
