Hardware Store Rocks - preparation

Are there any precautions that shoul dbe taken if I wanted to just purchase rocks from a local hardware store vs. a pet store ??

I've used hardware store pea gravel as a substrate before with no problems. Just give it a thorough rinse before you use it.

A rock is a rock... regardless of who supplies it or what they intend for you to use it as...

If it is a "man made rock" it is likely made out of some form of concrete which is lime based and will drastically increase PH... these can be treated/soaked to loose effect... it just takes time, patience and lots of water changes...
