My 55 gallon should be up and running soon enough. I am looking for thoughts on a nice hardy fish to cycle with. Something midwater but interesting. Future stocking plans include a trio of clown loaches, a nice pleco of some sort, and an aro to grow out, are what i would like to have in there in the future.

I am going to be seeding the tank with established bacteria and media so the cycle shouldn't be too long.

Like i said, something interesting, preferably midwater. Thoughts?

I vote tin foil barbs for a cheap cycle fish that is hard to kill. They look nice and are active.

Silver dollars are nice as well

I actually thought about tinfoils to start. Was also thinking maybe some type of big midwater cyprinid.

buy a bunch of tetra's. rummynose, neon, or similar. They are active and shoal together and later on when the aro grows bigger and you are bored of them they will become disease-free snacks.

Go with some Blood Parrots. I'm not a big fan of these hybrids, but I do think they make Arowanas pop out.

there's a singapore restaurant down the street from me from me that has blood parrots and a couple of aros. I agree, I don't really like BPs, but they do go kinda good with the aros

why not a fishless cycle?
Because not everybody feels like going out and buying ammonia or whatever.

Keep in mind how large tinfoils and other related barbs get, and then throw in the fact that they are schooling fish. You're looking at 200+ Gallons in the end if you wanna go that way. Bala sharks don't get as big, and they grow slower. You're still looking at a big tank in the end.

I don't know that i have access to that much seed-bacteria. My buddy at the LFS said he could give me a few buckets and some media from their wet dry.

nice looking african chiclids
pseudotropheus zebras are the best to start with
i started with them, they were my first beautiful blue colored fish to live with my golds and mollies which were killed and eaten by the zebras
