One of my harlequin rasboras has slightly enlarged eyes. The right eye appears to have a thin fungal growth across the top. Between yesterday afternoon and this morning the thin growth has spread to the space between both eyes. Approximately one week ago I counted 7 harlequins. Yesterday only counted 5. Swimming and appetite are normal. No other fish have symptoms (unless you count the gold barbs being a little more aggressive with each other than usual). LFS merchant recommended Kanaplex to treat popeye. I have not treated the tank yet.

Should I wait to see if it clears up by itself? Should the entire tank be treated or should I isolate the symptomatic rasbora to receive treatment in a quarantine tank? Is it possibly something other than popeye? Any and all suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

I apologize for the quality of the photos; my phone camera is terrible. The rasbora in question is at the top of the first two photos. The mess floating at the top are box plants that I am using until the riccia grows in.

Background Information:

Tank is 38 gallons, freshwater, has been set up for roughly two years. Current temperature has been maintained around 81F/27C due to calibration issues with Eheim heater (shooting for 79F). The only live plant is riccia. One piece of driftwood. Aqueon Quiet Flow 50. Seachem Purigen bag needs to be recharged. A moderate amount of natural light hits the tank. Tank light is on for ~12 hours each day. Feeding every other day with Omega One Flakes. Occasional frozen brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms.

Using API Master Test Kit:

NH3 0 ppm (LFS tested 0.25 ppm)

NO2 0 ppm (LFS tested 0 ppm)

NO3 40 ppm (LFS tested 50 ppm)

pH 8

Current Inhabitants:

x1 Three Spot Gourami, female, ~3.5”

x1 Bristlenose, female, ~4”

x5 Harlequin Rasbora, the two oldest are ~1.5”

x5 Gold Barb, ~2”

Newest additions were 2 Harlequin rasboras four weeks ago. They were the only fish in this tank that I did not quarantine. Performed ~25% water change with gravel vac yesterday. Since adding the purigen bag, I have reduced water changes to 50% every couple weeks. I intend to revert to 25% weekly upon removal of purigen bag.
