I won a Harmsco pressurised filter on Ebay for $21.61. Anyone have any experience with these or know anything about them? I figured at that price i couldnt go wrong but know nothing about them.

Heres a pic of it.

You wouldn't be able to buy that in our local scrap yard for less than that. Looks interesting.

From my reading they seem to be great mechanical filters. You can read more about them at http://www.harmsco.com/products.php. They are pressurized in the sense that they can withstand significant pressure.

The one I'd love to have if I could afford it is the Harmsco Hurricane which is a combined cartridge filter and centrifugal separator. The separator gets rid of the larger particles even before the water reaches the cartridge (which is reusable down to about 10 or 20 microns).

I would really like to know just how much your Harmsco improves your filtration?

Heh, you could run it every week and totally forget about wcs, if it actually removes particles in the micron range

You could probably run it continuosly, but water changes still provide needed minerals.

Harmsco filters are used in the pool industry too. My experience with them is that they are avererage as a mechanical filter but they are the best built, hands down. Their all stainless construction is unbeatable and the thickness of the tank walls is way overkill. However, I have found that many of the manufacturers promises didn't stand up in the field. The main difference of using this for a fish tank is that the protiens from the fish waste will bond to the polyester fibers in the filter. Cleaning it will prove difficult, however if you soak it in TSP (Trisodium Phosphate) or automatic dishwasher powder, it will dissolve the organics. You can also soak it in a solution of Hydrogen Peroxide to remove any remaining waste material. Make sure you rinse the cartridge until the run off is clear before returning it to service.

Also, find out what it was used for previously. They are used in many industries such as dry cleaning. If it was used in anything other than water based service, you should consider a new cartridge. Look into the cost of a replacement cartridge and be prepared for a shock. Harmsco replacement filters are of the most expensive around.

Im still waiting for this filter to show up on my door step. Ive been looking around online at the filter cartridges and looks like they could be quite expensive. Thats pretty much off set by the money I saved on the unit itself though. If it doesnt show up soon Im going to start getting worried. When it arrives I'll take pictures and start taking advice on how best to use it.
